Law of Majority

According to Islamic Law the minority of male of female terminates when he/she attain puberty. Puberty and majority in the Islamic Law are one and the same. Among the Hanfi and the Shias puberty is presumed on the completion of the fifteenth year. In default of evidence as to puberty a minor of either sex is considered on the completion of fifteenth year. Under the Islamic Law any person who has attained puberty is entitled to act in all matters affecting his or her status or his/her property. This indigenous Islamic Law has been materially altered by the Majority Act (XI of 1875) and the only matters in which Muslim are now entitled to act on attainment of puberty are (1) Marriage (2) dower (3) Divorce. In all other matters his/her minority continues until the completion of eighteenth year.
